Glossary of Terms.
- FINE CABINETWORK:- Replacement of damaged legs, worn drawer
runners, veneer blisters, missing lines, damaged feet, carcase repairs
carried out in a traditional manner.
- MARQUETRY:- The cutting of fine small designs in different
veneers and the laying of loose veneers, brass and cutting replacement
sections as required to match original work.
- FRETWORK:- Fine pieces of pierced wood or brass.
- MOULDINGS:- I am able to make by hand any mouldings which may
be missing to match original.
- BRASS WORK:- Advice on the selection of handles, mounts or keys
that are missing. I am able to supply or adapt most brass fittings, to
match the colour of the original brass fitting.
- LEATHER INLAYS:- Replace missing or damage leathers to the top
of desks, or writing slopes.
- CLOCK CASES:- Repair to long cases, bracket clock cases, replacement
of missing marquetry, fretwork and mouldings and brass work
- FRENCH POLISHING:- I will always preserve any original colour
and polish on a piece, reviving and waxing the show wood, and only when
necessary strip wood and repolish surfaces that require such.
- FINE FINISHING:- The use of oils on modern pieces has become
very popular and this is another method of finishing I can provide. Finishes
on large surfaces such as staircases, balustrades, bookcases, etc., with
specialised hard wearing products and waxes.
- WAXING:- Once restoration is complete every piece will more
than likely benefit from a nice coating of wax to protect it from the
rigors of wear and tear.
